Pelvic Ultrasound

What it is

A pelvic ultrasound is a specialized imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and surrounding pelvic structures. In most cases, the ultrasound is performed using a transvaginal probe placed gently inside the vagina, which provides clearer images than an abdominal scan.

Why it’s important

  • Helps identify causes of pelvic pain, fertility, or abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • Detects conditions such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or pelvic infections.
  • Provides valuable insight for monitoring fertility, early pregnancy, or postmenopausal changes.

What to expect

The test is safe, non-invasive, and typically takes less than 30 minutes. A thin ultrasound probe is inserted into the vagina to capture images; most patients find it only mildly uncomfortable, if at all. The procedure does not involve radiation and carries no known risks, making it a reliable tool for ongoing gynecological care.
