Contraception: Counseling and Education for a Variety of Options

What it is

Contraception counseling is a personalized consultation where we review the full range of available birth control options and help you choose the method best suited to your health, lifestyle, and reproductive goals. Our priority is to provide evidence-based information and empower you to make an informed decision with confidence.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus by a healthcare professional. It provides long-term, reversible contraception for 3–12 years depending on the type.

  • Hormonal IUD: Releases a small amount of progestin to thicken cervical mucus, thin the uterine lining, and sometimes reduce menstrual bleeding.
  • Non-hormonal IUD (Copper IUD): Uses copper to prevent fertilization without hormones, ideal for women seeking a hormone-free option.

Nexplanon (Contraceptive Implant)

A flexible, matchstick-sized rod placed just under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a progestin steadily to prevent ovulation and pregnancy for up to 5 years. Highly effective, discreet, and quickly reversible once removed.

Birth Control Pills, Patch, or Vaginal Ring

All three methods combine estrogen and progestin to regulate the menstrual cycle and prevent ovulation.

  • Pills: Taken daily at the same time.
  • Patch: Worn on the skin and replaced weekly.
  • Vaginal Ring: Inserted into the vagina and replaced monthly or annually.

These options can also improve acne, regulate periods, and decrease menstrual cramps, offering both contraceptive and health benefits.

Non-Hormonal Options

For women who prefer to avoid hormones, we provide counseling on barrier and chemical-free methods, including:

  • Caya Diaphragm: A reusable silicone barrier placed inside the vagina before sex.
  • Phexxi Vaginal Gel: A non-hormonal gel applied before intercourse to lower vaginal pH and block sperm mobility.
  • Female Condoms: A barrier method that also provides protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Surgical Options for Permanent Sterilization

  • Tubal ligation: (also known as tying the tubes) a minimally invasive outpatient surgical procedure in which the fallopian tubes are cut and tied with special thread, closed shut with bands or clips, or sealed with an electric current.
  • Bilateral Salpingectomies: a minimally invasive outpatient surgical procedure in which the fallopian tubes are removed.
