What it is

A diagnostic procedure that uses a special microscope (colposcope) to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for abnormalities.

When it’s recommended

  • Abnormal results on a Pap smear or HPV test.
  • Presence of lesions or unexplained bleeding.

How it’s performed

A mild solution may be applied to the cervix to highlight abnormal cells. If necessary, a small biopsy is taken for further analysis. This is an in-office procedure.
