Cervical Cancer Screening (Pap Smear and HPV Testing)

What it is

A test performed to detect abnormal or precancerous cells in the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer. Screenings may involve cervical cytology (aka Pap smear), human papillomavirus (HPV) test, or a combination of both.

Why it’s important

  • Detects changes in cervical cells early, when treatment is most effective and less invasive.
  • Helps identify high-risk HPV infections that may need closer monitoring.
  • Reduces cancer risk through early intervention.

What to expect

During the exam, a small sample of cells is gently collected from the cervix and sent to the lab for analysis. Depending on age and risk factors, your provider will recommend how often screening should be repeated.
